Cyril Townsend, who served as Conservative MP for Bexleyheath from 1974 to 1997, has announced that he has joined the Liberal Democrats.
"Essex residents face a proposed council tax rise of 4.6% - around twice the rate of both general inflation and the increase pensioners will receive in April this year" says Cllr Tom Smith-Hughes, leader of the Liberal Democrats on Essex County Council.

Conservative plans for transport across Essex are 'not based on a realistic expectation of funding' according to the government. That was the view of GOEE (Government Office for the East of England) when presented with Essex County Council's plans for transport over the next five years.
At this time of year, we need to remember those worse off than ourselves. This Labour government keeps telling us that Britain is getting better; but it's not getting better for everybody. Unfairness divides our society. Inequality is worse than under Margaret Thatcher. We have an unfair tax system which means those on the lowest earnings pay more of their income in tax than the richest. Yet the new economy and the new information society have brought challenges and opportunities which should enable every individual to have the chance to make the best of their lives. These are challenges which I am determined my party will rise to.
