Waltham Abbey Heritage Economic Regeneration Scheme (HERS) has now closed although work is still being completed.

HERS projects were funded by the district council, English Heritage, Sainsbury and Tesco with match funding supplied by individual participants.

Local Liberal Democrats Phil Chadburn and Councillor Pat Brooks served on the steering group. They were pleased to help the town centre get a face-lift in a way that was sensitive to the conservation area and its historic character.

"There are still one or two shops in need of repair and the district council is looking at ways to deal with them. The Steering Group also looked at how to improve the general appearance of the town centre - making it cleaner and deterring the pigeons that cause so much damage," commented Phil.
