"Keep our lights on" says Epping Forest Lib Dems

19 Jan 2009

Lib Dem campaigner Ann Haigh has spoken up on behalf of local residents, requesting that the County Council keeps the lights on in Epping Forest.

The Conservative run county council has been trialling turning out the lights in different parts of the county between midnight and 5pm with a view of rolling out this new initiative after the local elections.

Speaking at the West Area Forum Councillor Ann Haigh said "Residents have the right to feel safe where they live. There are a number of tube trains that arrive at the district's stations after midnight and residents will be faced with walking home in the dark.

The Institute of Lighting Engineers states that street lighting reduces people's fear of crime, prevents night time personal injury and promotes evening social and leisure activities. Turning off the lights in Epping Forest can only be detrimental to the local economy and our quality of life."
