Epping resident Jon Whitehouse is the Liberal Democrat choice as parliamentary candidate for the Epping Forest constituency. Jon has been a district councillor in Epping since 1999. Residents subsequently elected him to Essex County Council representing Epping & Theydon Bois.

"I am very proud to be running for election in the constituency where I have lived since I was six weeks old," said Jon. "As a councillor I have got to know all areas of Epping Forest. There are many vital issues that can only be decided in Parliament and I am campaigning to ensure that residents' voices are heard when Parliament makes decisions."

The Liberal Democrats have set out plans to protect spending on education, improve mental health services and preserve our environment. "These are all issues close to my heart," said Jon.

The Liberal Democrats will

  • cut income tax by an additional £400 by raising the tax-free allowance to £12,500.
  • properly fund our world class public services by investing in them as the economy grows. This means making sure the NHS has the extra £8bn a year it needs by 2020
  • protect the education budget from cradle to college, so that every child and young person has the opportunity to fulfill their potential, from nursery school to higher education.
  • protect the environment so that future generations are not left paying for the mistakes of the generations before them. "For the people of Epping Forest, protecting our Green Belt is absolutely vital. Looking after our environment isn't an optional extra, it's essential to our well-being, now and in the future", said Jon.

Liberal Democrats in government have put policies into practice. Locally, schools in Epping Forest have benefited from £1.5 million extra funding via the pupil premium, which has provided targetted help to disadvantaged children. Thousands of local people have benefited from the Liberal Democrats' income tax cut and a record number of people are being trained through apprenticeships.
