Epping Forest Liberal Democrats Launch Post Office Petition

20 Mar 2006

Epping Forest Liberal Democrats have called on the government to safeguard the future of the post office network.

Under the Conservative Government 3500 post offices closed. Under Labour another 4000 have disappeared, hitting communities across the country.

"Govenernment support for rural post offices is already due to end in 2008. now the Government says it will not use Post Office Card accounts to pay pensions and benefits from 2010. This is worth more than one billion pounds to local post offices between 2003 and 2010. It could lead to the closures of thousands more post offices," says Janet Whitehouse.

"People should still have the option of using post office card counts at their local post office," she added. "The Liberal Democrats have raised the issue in Parliament and we have launched a petition calling on the Government to keep Post Office card accounts."
