LOCAL Conservatives are under fire for spreading misleading information about big fines for people who produce too much waste for the wheelie bin system. The council has not agreed to implement any system of new fines.
If people do produce too much waste they will receive information and advice on how to recycle their rubbish. Households which can't avoid producing large amounts of non-recyclable waste can request an extra-large bin. Any decision to implement fines for people who abuse the system will only be made after the council's nine member 'Cabinet' (which contains four Conservatives, two Lib Dems, one Loughton Resident, one Labour member, and one Conservative backed Independent) has considered a formal report.

- Epping Forest Lib Dems welcome expansion of recycling
Following pressure from local Liberal Democrats, Epping Forest District Council will soon be announcing an expansion of recycling. Councillor Janet Whitehouse has been campaigning for years to get the district council to collect aluminium foil and containers. Although not formally announced, residents can start recycling silver foil and containers immediately along with the other dry recyclables in the clear sacks. On hearing the news, Councillor Janet Whitehouse commented: "Many residents, especially the elderly who rely on meals-on-wheels, have been asking for this service for years. I am pleased pressure from the Liberal Democrats means that residents will be able to recycle silver foil. This will increase the recycling rates in EF and keep the foil out of expensive landfill sites." - Brook Road Pavement
Your local Lib Dem Focus Team is campaigning for a path along Brook Road. Cllrs Ann Haigh, Jill Sutcliffe, Angela Cass and Joyce Darby are pressing for a pavement to be provided along Brook Road. They have put in a high priority request to Essex County Council Highways to take action on this. The Corporation of London, who administer the land on which the path needs to be built, has agreed in principle. Liberal Democrat councillors will press Essex County Council and Epping Forest District Council to finance the work. The Waltham Forest end of Brook Road already has a pavement but it stops at the border with Buckhurst Hill. `Our residents need the safety of a pavement to join up with the existing one,` says Ann. - Rubbish Collection Update
Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group on Epping Forest District Council, Jon Whitehouse, has today received clarification on the many missed rubbish and recycling collections across the district. Councillor Whitehouse commenting on the current situation said "Residents cannot miss the great piles of recycling lying about which weren't picked up before Christmas because of the bad weather. We had been told that the contractors will try to catch up, but this advice has now changed. The council has now said that the contractors will revert to the revised timetable rather than catching up. This will mean in some areas rubbish will not have been collected for up to 4 weeks. Therefore, the contractor will collect any additional waste placed next to your container. - Tories reject CO2 Reduction Campaign
At a meeting of Full Council of Essex County Council today, 13 October, the ruling Conservative group voted down a Liberal Democrat proposal for Essex County Council to join to 10:10 Campaign, which seeks to deliver 10% cuts in carbon dioxide emissions during 2010. The 10:10 Campaign is backed by the Labour, Conservative and Liberal Democrat parliamentary front benches and is also supported by many councils and significant organisations such as Microsoft, O2 and NHS Trusts. Councillor Tom Smith Hughes, Liberal Democrat Group Leader, commented: "I am extremely disappointed at the complacent attitude and decision of the Conservatives not to join the 10:10 Campaign. One of the aims of the campaign is to galvanise action by individuals, with 40% of the UK's CO2 emissions being a result of personal choice. The County Council, as a community leader, is in an excellent position to lead by example and encourage businesses and individuals to make the same commitment. Sadly, an important opportunity has been missed." - Keep our lights on
Essex County Council wants to turn off the street lights in Epping Forest between midnight and 5 in the morning. The Conservative led council say it will be less environmentally damaging, but the real reason is to save money. Local Liberal Democrats along with The Institute of Lighting Engineers doubts that the Conservatives' proposals will save energy overall. They suggest dimming streetlights - not switching them off. Councillor Ann Haigh recently raised residents' concerns with the county council. "Many Loughton and Buckhurst Hill residents use the tube to travel home after midnight," said Councillor Haigh. "They will now be forced to walk some of their journey home in the dark." Out on the beat Before Christmas Councillor Ann Haigh spent a night on the beat with local Police Officers in Loughton. "I saw at first hand the number of people out past midnight. Turning off the streets would have a detrimental effect on night time economy in so many of our towns." - Green plans will boost jobs and homes in Epping Forest
Liberal Democrats in Epping Forest have given their backing to plans for investment in green schemes that will make homes warmer, cut energy bills and improve public transport. The plans, called Green Road out of Recession, were announced on 18th December by Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg MP. The plans will cost £12.5bn, which would be paid for by scrapping the proposed VAT cut. The vast majority of that money will be spent immediately, making a real impact on the economy and people's lives right away. Green Road out of the Recession proposals include: • A five-year programme to insulate every school and hospital, with 20% completed in the first year • Funding insulation and energy efficiency for a million homes, with a £1,000 subsidy for a million more • Building 40,000 extra zero-carbon social houses • Buying 700 new train carriages • Quadrupling the number of train lines between Broxbourne and Cheshunt • Installing energy and money saving smart meters in every home within five years "The plans proposed by Nick Clegg and the Liberal Democrats will give an immediate boost to the economy here in Epping Forest," said Liberal Democrat parliamentary campaigner Ann Haigh. "And by insulating people's homes, it will help thousands of residents whose heating bills have gone through the roof in the past year. "Whilst Labour and the Conservatives are quietly dropping serious interest in tackling climate change and damage to the environment, Liberal Democrats believe that moving forward with green action on homes and transport will create jobs, cut energy bills, put money back into people's pockets and protect the environment." - Caring for our High Street
Bus passengers will soon benefit from new shelters on Epping High Street. "We have chosen designs which will be more in keeping with Epping than the current ugly ones," said Lib Dem town councillor Rob Macrae. The shelters will replace those outside St John's Church on both sides of the street and should be in place in Autumn. Lib Dem councillors have asked for a bus shelter by the shops in Coopersale, following a request from residents. "We expect funding to become available next year," said district councillor Jon Whitehouse. Local Liberal Democrat councillor Janet Whitehouse was joined by county and district council officers on an inspection of Epping High Street after she received complaints from residents that advertising signs and chairs were blocking parts of the pavement. "I encouraged the officers to take a common sense approach - taking action where necessary, especially where the pavement is narrow, but not being heavy handed," said Janet. - Liberal Democrats in Epping Forest back calls for UK energy independence
LIBERAL Democrats in Epping Forest have given their strong backing to ambitious calls by Nick Clegg MP for Britain to become self-sufficient in energy. The Liberal Democrat Leader has called for a major programme to build up Britain's own energy supplies through wind, tidal, wave and biomass technologies. Mr Clegg said, "We have an enormous opportunity to create real energy independence for the UK, freeing ourselves from the shackles of foreign oil, coal and gas. This will require the kind of ambition and political will that succeeded in putting man on the moon." Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Campaign Councillor Ann Haigh said, "I am delighted that Nick Clegg is calling for a green revolution in the way we produce power. "The recent Russian invasion of Georgia and the ongoing troubles in Iraq and Iran show just how dangerously reliant Britain is on energy from unstable parts of the world. "We have to build up our own energy supplies and as an island nation, we have an abundance of natural and clean energy sources that both Labour and Conservative governments have failed to develop. "Whilst Labour and the Conservatives joined together earlier this year to agree Britain should have a new generation of nuclear power stations, Liberal Democrats believe this will leave a legacy of radioactive waste for future generations. It will also leave us dependent on foreign supplies of uranium. "Liberal Democrats in Epping Forest welcome Nick Clegg's call for Britain to develop clean energy supplies and become self-sufficient in them by 2050. This is an industry in which we as a nation should aim to be world beaters" Published and promoted by Epping Forest Liberal Democrats, 13 Ardmore Lane, Buckhurst Hill, Essex IG9 5RY Printed (hosted) by Prater Raines Ltd, 98 Sandgate High Street, Folkestone CT20 3BY

- Liberal Democrats in Epping Forest back National Recycling Week
A UK-wide campaign to encourage people to recycle more of their household waste has been backed by Liberal Democrats in Epping Forest. National Recycling Week is being held on 2nd - 8th June. This is the fifth year it has been held. It is run by Waste Resources Action Programme (WRAP), a national organisation set up to help people produce less waste and advise on how best to deal with rubbish in an environmentally friendly way. Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Campaigner Councillor Ann Haigh said, "In Epping Forest each person is on average producing 258kg of waste a year that is not recycled or composted. "Liberal Democrats in Epping Forest are delighted to be able to back National Recycling Week. We are encouraging as many residents as possible to make small changes in their lifestyles which will make large strides to ensuring we do not wreck our environment. "We waste a huge amount of food each year - on average we throw away 112kg of food each, most of which is still usable. "Many residents have told me they would like to start recycling their food waste, but are unaware they can. Anyone is Epping Forest can dispose of raw fruit and vegetable matter by placing it in the sack along with their garden waste. "There is a limit to how much rubbish we can throw into holes in the ground. There comes a point when we have to say that we cannot go on getting rid of waste in this way. "I am therefore delighted that National Recycling Week is underway. I hope it will be a great success and will help residents of Epping Forest to cut waste and live greener lifestyles." - Mar 12, 2008:
- Budget is a great green cop out
Today's budget is a green cop out which kicks the difficult decisions on environmental taxes into the long grass and offers no help to the millions of hard pressed families struggling to make ends meet, according to Liberal Democrat Leader, Nick Clegg. He said: "This is not a green budget. This is not a people's budget. This is a con trick budget that protects the rich and abandons the poor. The Government has bottled it on green taxes and failed to implement the necessary measures to cut child poverty." Unlike Liberal Democrat proposals for a Green Tax Switch, the money raised from environmental taxes will not be given back to families in the form of other tax cuts, but instead be taken by the Government to fill its black hole. Commenting, Nick Clegg said: "This was an opportunity to give whatever help possible to millions of stretched British families who are feeling the pinch; whose money just doesn't go as far as it used to. "This is a budget which gives only limited help to the poor, but maintains special treatment for the rich. "A budget designed to fill a black hole masquerading as good for the environment. A budget which will not make Britain fairer, and a budget that is a great green cop out, as most of the new green taxes are being delayed. "The piecemeal reforms that the chancellor is introducing to the chaotic Tax Credit system won't get the Government anywhere near meeting its 2010 Child Poverty target. "The reality is that the Government's approach has failed. If we are to abolish child poverty for good we must not only increase income we must increase opportunity too. "These are the people most in need in our society - yet after ten years and yet another budget, they are still no nearer being given the true support they need. "Green taxes should be revenue-neutral. They should not be treated as a wheeze to squeeze ever more money out of the British people, but should instead be designed to encourage green behaviour, and to cut the taxes of the most needy. "This is not a budget for the environment. It's a budget driven by fiscal incompetence and political desperation. "Why has Alistair Darling not had the guts to claw back the huge profits made by energy companies, thanks to the emissions permits that the Government has given them for free? "4.5 million people still live in fuel poverty and the Government's 2010 fuel poverty target has been conveniently forgotten by ministers. "Trying to grab headlines by increasing the Winter Fuel Payment for just one year will do nothing to help poor pensioners in the long run. "Surely this is the time to compel all energy companies to introduce real, fair, social tariffs for all vulnerable people, not just those on pre-paid meters? "This budget gives no real help to families struggling with higher food bills, higher energy bills and higher debt repayments. What is this budget doing to help junior nurses, teaching assistants and soldiers serving in Afghanistan? The answer is nothing. "After 11 years in Government, Labour has completed its fiscal fusion with the Tory Party." - Lib Dem campaign force Tory U-turn
The Tory council has bowed to public pressure and found an extra £5,000 for removing graffiti. At the beginning of the summer Liberal Democrats across Epping Forest started a campaign against the Tory run district council's decision to cut funding for the graffiti removal service. Many residents in Loughton, Buckhurst Hill and Waltham Abbey supported this campaign by signing the Liberal Democrat petition. Loughton resident and campaigner Neil Woollcott said: "This small token is a step in the right direction by the Tory council. The Liberal Democrats are against Tory plans to cut funding for grafitti removal Epping Forest Liberal Democrats have reacted in anger at the news that Conservative run Epping Forest District council is cutting the budget for removing graffiti. Councillor Peter Spencer said: "The Tories were elected on a promise to improve the local environment. It is appalling that one of the first decisions the new administration has made is to cut this vital service."
