Potholes in Epping Forest

Liberal Democrat County Councillor Janet Whitehouse has vowed to contunue to highlight the problem with the Conservative's policy on potholes into 2011. The Conservative's plans have seen and will continue to see potholes staying bigger for longer, whilst misaligned paving is left indefinitely.

Epping Forest Liberal Democrats have been inundated with local residents reports of potholes; Councillor Whitehouse has reported many potholes to the Highways Department since the beginning of the 2011. If you know of a pothole send us an email to: potholes@eflibdems.org.uk.

    • Six to fix
Epping Forest Liberal Democrats work hard all year round. Over the past few months Councillor Ann Haigh and Councillor Janet Whitehouse and the Lib Dem Team have been out and about talking with residents about issues that matter to them. Protecting our children Many parents have told the Liberal Democrats they are concerned that the Conservative-run council has failed our children. Essex's safeguarding procedures were graded inadequate by OFSTED. The Liberal Democrats would cut the County Council's £5 million a year propaganda budget and invest in youth services instead. Pothole Crazy Time and time again local residents raise the issue of the state of our roads. Despite much publicity by the Conservatives, many residents have told the Liberal Democrats they are still unhappy with the potholes that litter the roads. Essex Liberal Democrats proposed more money for road repairs in the 2007 budget. The Conservatives opposed this. • LIB DEMS ELECTION PLEDGE - SERVICES NOT SPIN
Liberal Democrats in Essex launched their election campaign today by highlighting one of their campaign issues - potholes. Cllr Tom Smith-Hughes explained more about the party's campaign: "It's a very simple message - taxpayers' money needs to be spent on more services for the benefit of local people and less on spin and publicity that benefits politicians. "Sadly, the last four years of Conservative control has seen Essex County Council downgraded in its performance by independent assessors. This was mainly as a result of its deteriorating children's services in general and services for vulnerable children in particular, which along with only seven other councils in the country, have been identified as inadequate. Concentrating on providing first class services and getting the basics right must be the first priority, yet money has been frittered away on hosting seminars, spin and publicity and the launch of a publicly funded public relations company. "We want roads and pavements fixed and comprehensive services for the elderly, the sick and for children. Liberal Democrats would cut the council's budget for publicity and spin and reinvest the money into mainstream services. Services not spin. "Providing high quality council services that the public wants and expects is the primary concern of Liberal Democrats in Essex and is at the centre of our election manifesto. At this time of financial uncertainty, it is especially important that hard earned taxpayers' money is spent diligently and appropriately. "The council is currently sitting on £200m in reserve funds, money that has been paid by taxpayers, and we would return some of that money back to struggling residents for them to spend as they see fit." • What A Lot Of Potholes
Essex County Council has spent millions of pounds on road maintenance, yet less than half of local residents are satisfied with the speed at which potholes are fixed. A similar proportion of residents are dissatisfied with the quality of the repairs. These are the shocking findings of a review of the Council's highways maintenance performance. The report also shows that many people are unhappy with the state of pavements. Last year, the Liberal Democrats proposed an extra £3 million for fixing roads and pavements but the ruling Conservatives opposed the proposal. Even more controversially, the Conservatives are allowing potholes to get deeper before the Council repairs them. Under the new highways policy, if you get an injury by tripping on a footpath or road, you are less likely to be awarded compensation from the council. • Conservatives at odds over pothole policy
Conservatives in Chigwell Row are at odds with one another over the ill-fated pothole policy, meaning larger potholes for longer. Locally the conservative county councillors have supportive this new policy. But, in a recent leaflet the Conservatives have said "...local parish councillors [Conservatives] have not endorsed this particular policy." Lib Dem parliamentary campaigner Councillor Ann Haigh said: "Whilst the Conservative are bickering over this new policy, many of the roads in Epping Forest continue to deteriorate. What we need is action." You can join Ann Haigh's campaign by signing the petition. • Epping Forest Liberal Democrats hand in pothole petition
Ann Haigh with some of the petitions against the Conservative controversial pothole policy Liberal Democrats in Epping Forest have presented their petition against the new pothole policy to Essex County Council. Many residents have signed the petition against the policy which will see potholes in Epping Forest become deeper for longer before they are fixed. Liberal Democrat parliamentary campaigner Ann Haigh said: "Whilst many of Conservatives in Epping Forest are now distancing themselves from this unpopular policy, very little is being done to mend the potholes littering our streets." "The Conservatives at County Hall say this new policy will lead to speedier repairs. You only have to look around the streets of Epping Forest to see this is not the case." • Apr 30, 2008:
    • Unknown cost to fix potholes a second or third time
Many residents have told Councillor Ann haigh they are angry that our roads are not maintained properly Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Campaigner Councillor Ann Haigh has discovered that the Conservative County Council has no means of checking the quality of repairs carried out to potholes in Epping Forest. Many residents have already responded to Ann Haigh's petition against the Conservative led county council's decision to change the criteria for dealing with potholes and misaligned kerb stones. Now, Councillor Ann Haigh has received notification from the head of highways maintenance that if a repair fails quickly, the contractors are responsible for rectifying the problem. However, the council has no data to show how often this happens and whether the repairs are successful. Commenting on the news Councillor Ann Haigh said "No sooner are potholes repaired, they become damaged again. Without checks being carried out by the county council the costs of repairing potholes will simply pass from the contractors who dealt unsuccessfully with the first repair onto residents. Residents could end up paying two, three or more times for repairing the pothole down their street" Published and promoted by Epping Forest Liberal Democrats, 13 Ardmore Lane, Buckhurst Hill, Essex IG9 5RY Printed (hosted) by Prater Raines Ltd, 98 Sandgate High Street, Folkestone CT20 3BY
  • Apr 10, 2008:
    • Map launched to keep a check on potholes
Already Councillor Ann Haigh and the Liberal Democrat team in Epping forest have reported over 20 potholes Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Campaigner Councillor Ann Haigh has launched an interactive map on this website (www.eflibdems.org.uk/potholes) to highlight the vast problem of potholes in Epping Forest. Many residents have contacted Ann and other Liberal Democrat councillors in the district following news that the Conservatives in Essex are changing their policy on fixing potholes, making them bigger for longer. Councillor Ann Haigh said: "Residents have told me on the doorstep that they are unhappy how the roads in Epping Forest are maintained. 'It is not surprising the public are so fired up over this issue. The state of the roads in and around Epping Forest is simply not good enough, yet the County Council are cutting the budget and insisting on leaving potholes to get larger before they are repaired." If you know of a pothole that needs to be added to the list, then send an email to potholes@eflibdems.org.uk.
