Lib Dem calls for bursaries to address staff shortages

January 14, 2009 11:33 AM

At the recent West Area Forum Lib Dem parliamentary campaigner Councillor Ann Haigh put forward a suggestion offering bursaries to reduce shortages in council services.

The bursaries would be available to anyone who wishes to train in areas where the county council face staff shortages, are finding it hard to recruit qualified staff or where there is a high turnover of staff. In return for financial support trainees would make a commitment to work for the local authority for a set period of time.

OFSTED found in December 2008 a major area of development for the county council is ensure that they deliver front-line services with 'continuity and consistency.'

Councillor Ann Haigh said "More and more I am hearing from headteachers, teachers and social workers across the district who are telling me they are frustrated that there are not enough psychologists and psychotherapists available to work with children in their schools.

"By funding bursaries in return of a commitment to work for a set period of time, the council can ensure it delivers betters services with an opportunity to ensure consistency across the county."
